Liquidation

press to exit project space, Skopje, 2008

This work was done for the closing event/exhibition of the gallery space of the press to exit project space titled “Future Perfect”.

The work itself is just a single word – LIQUIDATION – written in Macedonian in Cyrillic displayed in the window display of the gallery, to be viewed/read from outside, from the street.

In law, the term liquidation refers to the process by which a company (or part of a company) is brought to an end. This work is just stating the obvious in a manner that has been widely used throughout the city for announcing the closures of various commercial spaces like small shops going out of business. With this simple gesture I am stressing the permutation of the function of this space dedicated to culture to now something else. The work adds to a couple of my previous works, when with much the same means (signs in the window display) I have turned a working gallery into a grocery shop (“Minimarket”, Skopje) and on the other occasion proclaimed open, unused and closed commercial spaces (“d.o.o.”, Ljubljana).

I find ironic and illustrative of the dominant consumerist values in our society today that on the day when one of the very few independent cultural spaces in the city was being closed, another space with a very different content  - a department store - was being opened under the confusing name - “City Gallery”. With this small, ephemeral work I tried to reflect on these social processes and encourage public debate over issues concerning the existence and use of (cultural) public spaces.
